Lake Erie Fishing Reports - July 2021

July 8th, 2021

Lake Erie: Anglers were needing to go further out or south to 27 feet of water. The white bass fishing slowed down considerably. Sheepshead are still common on slower crawler harnesses. Green bottom bouncers are hitting well and fish are low and dispersed. Purple and chrome bandits do good on sunny days. Anglers have been catching more walleye out in 24 to 28 feet of water. Anglers are still pulling in walleye off crawler harnesses with green showing good results. Anglers, trolling over 2 mph, running bandits and spoons have had less by catch, and purple/chartreuse have been hot colors. People have been having more run ins with weeds to the north by Fermi Power Plant, so fishing the dumping grounds has been a good alternative for anglers. Not many people were catching perch still, but bass fishing in Brest Bay was good with the occasional northern pike.

Lake Erie: Walleye were being caught by the state line off of Fermi Power Plant. Anglers were finding lots of weeds down by the dumping grounds. Anglers running crawlers with success were still on green harnesses and catching fish off hot 'n tots with purple and chartreuse still being productive colors. Bottom bouncers in 27 to 28 feet of water were also doing well for walleye. Yellow perch fishing was starting to pick up. Anglers were finding success out in front of Luna Pier and Toledo Beach. Shiner minnows were getting the best results for yellow perch. Anglers were finding the occasional large channel catfish when fishing out deep off of Bolles. Anglers were catching bluegill by Bolles as well. Freshwater drum are still prevalent, troll faster to avoid them if using crawlers. Largemouth and smallmouth bass were closer to shore.

Lake Erie: Boat anglers targeting walleye were productive near the dumping grounds. Anglers were also finding largemouth bass in Brest Bay. Yellow perch anglers were having productive catches off C buoy and at the dumping grounds. For walleye, use hot n tots and wiggle warts to avoid bycatch. The recommended colors are blue, chrome and purple. Crawler harnesses were still productive on yellow, green and chrome.
