Non-fishing dad feels a little lost!
« on: May 27, 2019, 10:27:30 PM »
Hi all, I have been browsing around these forums for a while and decided to post. I am NOT a fisherman. I have put a rod and worm in the water and have caught something but am by no way a fisherman.

That being said, my 10 year old son is getting really interested in fishing. We live close to a Lake Erie beach near Amherstburg Ontario, just down from where the Detroit River enters Lake Erie.  I do not have access to a boat. My son loves to cast into the water from the shore .... but has never caught anything. He tries different lures but has had no luck.

I am not sure how to set up his fishing rod (weights, hooks, lures, etc) for his best chance of success. Or what bait to use.

Is catching fish from a beach possible?  I would appreciate any and all advice before my son loses interest from not catching anything!

Thanks, eh? ;-)

You're not going to get much from the beach on shore the water is too shallow. You need to fish off a pier or better yet head to the Detroit river in Windsor area and drive along the shoreline, you will see parks and people fishing. Right now the white bass are in thick and you can catch them on anything. Try a 3/8 oz jig and gulp minnow. Cast and retrieve and you will catch them and your son will have a blast. See what the others are doing.

If you can find a park with a marsh or creek. Try fishing there with worms. Should get catfish and sunfish. Fun for kids
