Lake St Clair Fishing Reports - Mar 2019

Mar 7, 2019

Lake St. Clair: Recent cold temperatures have firmed up conditions in the canals, marinas, and nearshore areas. For the rest of the lake, please do not drive vehicles on the ice this late in the season. Use caution near the Fair Haven ramp due a truck going through the ice. Fishing success was sporadic now that the fish are in that slow mid-winter pattern.

St. Clair River: This time of year, boat anglers are often lured out to try to get in some early spring fishing. Ice from southern Lake Huron will often clog at the Bluewater Bridge and temporarily stop the flow of ice. Conditions can change drastically in a short time period, so anglers need to use extreme caution as shifting winds or changes in ice flow can completely cut off access to the boat launch.

Hello all, I live in Hamilton and would like to try Mitchells bay this coming Tuesday. Could anyone give me any info on bait, and ice thickness. As well as how far out the walk is at mitchells bay?   Any and all help appreciated...

Lake St. Clair: Still had some ice fishing opportunities however there is a lot of open water offshore. The warm-up and rain will increase the risk for pressure cracks to open-up. Any significant wind could break off large areas of ice and prevent anglers from getting back to shore. Catch rates slowed compared to previous weeks. Some very nice pike were taken off the Fairhaven launch and some decent bluegill catches were reported off the Raft Restaurant. Very few perch were caught but those taken seem to like the color red.

Detroit River: Boat anglers are taking a few walleyes, but it is still early. Those fishing the canals near Gibraltar caught a good number of perch. Boat anglers need to go slow and watch for ice coming down the river.

Lake St. Clair: Most of the ice is gone and any remaining ice should not be considered safe. There is still some ice present at the Selfridge and Fairhaven boat launches. The Harley Ensign Launch and Brandenburg Park are wide open however there are no docks in anywhere and they won't be for a couple weeks.

St. Clair River: Had no ice flowing in the main river. There is very little ice currently in Lake Huron. Boats are launching out of Marysville and Decker's Landing. Some walleye and salmon are being caught near Port Huron.

Detroit River

Walleye are starting to be caught in the lower river with a jig and minnow, stinger hooks and rubber tails. Perch fishing was good in the canals around Gibraltar and Gross Ile. Some limit catches were reported; however, anglers are also having to sort through the small ones.

Lake St. Clair

Most of the ice is gone, aside from a few canals that had thin ice that was no longer safe. The launches at Harley Ensign and Brandenburg are open water, but Crocker, Selfridge, and Fairhaven still had ice.

St. Clair River

Most of the launches are open. Anglers fishing the upper river are finding a few walleye.
