Lake St Clair Fishing Reports - July 2018

Lake St. Clair:  The better walleye catches were around the St Clair Light and in the shipping channel in 20 to 30 feet near the drop-offs.  Fair catches of perch were also taken by those walleye anglers trolling a crawler harness.  The river mouths are a good place to look for smallmouth bass and walleye this time of year.  Smallmouth fishing was best along the Mile Roads in 10 to 12 feet.  Those fishing the canals caught a fair number of bluegills and rock bass along with the occasional perch when using crawlers.

Lake St. Clair

Anglers caught walleye at the mouth of the South Channel in 20 feet. A 4-ounce weight seems to work better and a 2-ounce weight. The fish have been hitting right as the bait comes off the bottom and the bite was light. Anglers have also caught some perch. Other walleye anglers did fair in front of the Brandenburg launch in 14 feet before the sun comes up. Hot colors were bronze, green or copper. Legal size musky were caught off the Dumping Grounds in 19 feet when casting artificial baits.  Smallmouth bass fishing has been great everywhere.

Detroit River:  Anglers have caught bass.  Some yellow perch were taken in eight to 12 feet near Sugar Island.  Walleye could still be found in the deeper waters of the shipping channels when hand-lining.     

Lake St. Clair:  Had excellent walleye fishing throughout the lake with some of the hottest spots being in all three of the channels. Everything from crawler harnesses to crankbaits have taken fish.  Smallmouth bass are getting picked up in deeper water near the North Channel and along Anchor Bay when casting tube baits or drop-shotting in the early morning.  Perch fishing picked up but most of the fish were quite small.  A couple muskie were caught near the Clinton River Cutoff.

Detroit River:  Anglers were still taking some yellow perch around the islands including Sugar and Belle Isle.   

Lake St. Clair:  Smallmouth bass were hitting on everything from tube baits to hard plastic in Anchor Bay.  Water clarity was down slightly but fish were still biting.  If you’re heading out for muskie try either Anchor Bay or directly out from the Clinton River Spill Way.  A couple walleye were caught in Michigan waters out near the St. Clair Light when trolling a crawler harness and bottom bouncer.   

St. Clair River:  Is producing walleye in the Middle and South Channels.  Most anglers are jigging or trolling a crawler harness.  The average catch was one to two fish.
