Title: Lake St Clair Fishing Reports May 2018

Detroit River:  A couple anglers managed to catch a limit of walleye at the mouth of the river in 20 feet with a chartreuse jig tipped with a minnow.

Lake St. Clair:  Smallmouth bass fishing improved off the Mile Roads, in front of Selfridge, and along the shoreline between the Harley Ensign launch and Metro Beach in eight to 12 feet.  The shoreline between the 9-Mile launch and Masonic Park was also producing a good number of fish.  Anglers also picked up a couple walleye.  Largemouth bass are in the shallows and the canals.  Sizable pike and undersize musky were caught my many.  Perch fishing was slow.  Crappie and sunfish cruising the marinas and back channels were hitting on small jigs, minnows and crawlers.  Water clarity had improved quite a bit.

St. Clair River:  Has been on fire for walleye with the better action in the lower river.

Detroit River:  Good walleye fishing continues throughout the river including down near the mouth and in the Trenton Channel.  Most are using a jig and minnows.  The white bass action is just getting started.

Lake St. Clair:  Bass fishing slowed quite a bit but a few were still being caught. Hard plastics such as jerk baits seemed to work best.  Fishing off the Mile Roads seemed to be better than the middle or the north end.  Unfortunately, walleye are nonexistent in the lake but reports from the rivers remain very positive.  Panfish including perch, crappie, bluegill and pumpkinseed were also slow even in the It should not be too much longer before the bite picks up.

St. Clair River:  Continued to have good walleye fishing.

Detroit River:  Anglers are catching good numbers of white bass.  Walleye fishing continues.  Jigs and minnows continue to work well.  Those hand-lining at night have caught a good number of fish.

Lake St. Clair:  The walleye bite was heating up and some were getting limit catches.  Most fish ranged 15 to 16 inches.  The hot spot was the point at Metro Park.   The large and smallmouth bass bite is slowly picking up with fish hitting on jerk baits and crank baits along the Mile Roads.  Few panfish were showing up.  Those looking for them saw a couple bluegill and crappie in the canals between the Harley Ensign and Selfridge launch.

St. Clair River:  Was still producing a good number of walleye including some limit catches in the North Channel.  Most were about 16 inches which are good eaters.

Detroit River:  Had limit catches of white bass.  Many were fishing in the Trenton Channel and between Wyandotte and the mouth.  Walleye were caught in the shipping channel east of Grosse Isle.  Most were jigging dark plastics with minnows.

Lake St. Clair:  Walleye anglers did very well when trolling a crawler harness or crank bait along the shoreline in six to eight feet.  It appears the bass have moved up into the bays or inlets between the islands where the water was warmer.  There, both large and smallmouth and some pike were caught.  Perch were slow but sunfish, rock bass and white bass were hitting crawlers.

Detroit River:  Had a few anglers jigging for walleye at the mouth as most of the fish have dropped down into the lake.  Some white bass were still being caught.

Lake St. Clair:  Had decent smallmouth bass fishing but anglers had to search for them as the fish seemed to be schooled together in dense areas.  Muskamoot Bay and off the Mile Roads were the better spots.  Walleye anglers had luck in six to eight feet in the early morning when trolling a crawler harness or casting crank baits in Anchor Bay and off Metro Beach.  Those fishing in the afternoon did best near the St. Clair Light.  Anglers caught good numbers of white bass and rock bass and there are plenty of pike especially around the weed beds and marsh areas off Fairhaven.
