Lake St Clair Fishing Reports - Feb 2019
« on: February 06, 2019, 04:28:16 PM »
Feb 6, 2018

Lake St. Clair: The Clinton River out at Harley Ensign opened back up because of the warm water discharge over the weekend. Most of the lake had an inch or so of water covering the ice. The action was good for bluegills, sunfish and pike near the Raft Restaurant. Anglers did well for a few days at the end of Cotton Road while taking bluegills and some jumbo perch however the action did slow. Those walking out from the Crocker Road DNR ramp caught some perch on jigging spoons with or without minnows and wax worms in six to eight feet near Gino's. Most were six to eight inches with a few as big as 10 inches. Perch were caught from the Clinton River Cut-off to the Raft Restaurant. Most were small, but about half the anglers did manage to take some decent size fish.

Detroit River: Airport Bay at the south end of Grosse Ile was producing some perch ranging 10 to 12 inches.

Lake St. Clair: Anglers took nice catches of perch in front of Gino's when jigging red and chartreuse teardrops tipped with minnows. Those venturing about a mile out from the Clinton River Cut-Off had some luck spearing pike. The perch action was spotty however some were getting 15 to 25 decent size fish from all access points when they found the fish. Those targeting bluegills near the Raft Restaurant were getting limits however the bite was slow, and it was an all-day effort. There was open water off the point at the Harley Ensign launch however anglers were still fishing in the bay opposite the river side.

Lake St. Clair: The main areas fished nearshore were still relatively stable. Strong winds over the weekend shifted some of the ice in the main lake. With warmer weather on the way, anglers should be very cautious about venturing out too far into the main lake, especially on windy days. Anglers at the Metro Park and Selfridge had decent catches of yellow perch. The fish were not active all the time and some anglers were getting frustrated when they could see fish in the hole, but they would not bite. Moving around and looking for active schools will often pay off.

Lake St. Clair: Ice on the northern end remained relatively stable. The traditional nearshore areas did hold up in the wind. Areas offshore at Brandenburg, Selfridge, Harley Ensign and the Metro Park did open-up over the weekend and extreme caution should be used if venturing too far from shore. The lake is open water from the Clinton River Cutoff south to the Detroit River. This open water will allow the ice to shift and make for dangerous conditions if we get a strong north wind. Bluegill and sunfish were caught at the Raft Restaurant. Though the action was slow, anglers continue to bring in decent quantities and some good size fish. Try a smaller than average size jig with a spike; color was not important. At Selfridge, a few anglers found schools of fish just south of the ramp. Cotton Road has been tricky as anglers were either getting perch or not. Those that did were using jigs tipped with a spike.

Hi Leo:

For those of us newer to ice fishing and some of the terminology, what is a "spike"?  Thanks for all of your updates.

A spike is a maggot used for bait. They are usually white but can buy them in different colours pink and green work good.
