Niagara River Fishing Report - Jan 2020
« on: January 05, 2020, 08:19:36 AM »
Jan 5, 2020

Fishing quality went south at mid-week as windy weather riled Niagara River waters. River waters are still a bit turbid with a green-brown coloration, but improving. With lighter winds in the forecast, the river is a top trout option for the weekend. When conditions have permitted, boat anglers have seen decent to good trout fishing. The upper drifts have produced primarily catches of steelhead with some brown trout mixed in. Brown trout were more common closer to the mouth and on the Niagara Bar. Controlled drifting with three-way rigs with live shiners, egg sacs or trout beads has worked well. Shore anglers in the gorge are catching decent numbers of steelhead. All angler access (platform, stairs to shoreline, parking lot) at the NYPA Power Vista are closed for the winter season as of Dec.1.

Niagara River
Water conditions on the Niagara River are ok today, but expect turbid conditions with the weekend's wind and rain. When conditions have permitted, lower river boaters have seen a good trout bite in the drifts near Lewiston, down near the mouth of river and out on the Niagara Bar. River anglers are catching primarily steelhead with some brown trout and the occasional walleye mixed in. Controlled drifting with three-way rigs with live shiners, egg sacs or trout beads has worked well for trout. Walleye are more apt to hit rigs with shiners. Shore anglers in the gorge are catching decent numbers of steelhead. All angler access (platform, stairs to shoreline, parking lot) at the NYPA Power Vista are closed for the winter season as of Dec.1.
